NADeFA Applauds Kentucky Action on Cervid Importation

CANTON, Ohio — The North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), the nation’s leading voice for the cervid industry, commends the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s recent decision to rescind the ban on importation of cervids from Indiana. The regulatory rollback became effective May 1, 2015.

In a written memorandum, Kentucky State Veterinarian/Executive Director Robert C. Stout, DVM, stated that all Indiana epidemiologic traces from Pennsylvania and Ohio have been investigated and managed in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s CWD Programs standards, and that importation of cervids from Indiana may now be approved by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the Office of State Veterinarian (OSV).

“I want to thank the Kentucky Alternative Livestock Association (KALA) and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for inviting me to be a part of the negotiations on this matter,” says Shawn Schafer, executive director of NADeFA. “The KALA board of directors worked closely with the state veterinarian and made an extra effort to make sure the borders were reopened in time to move bred does yet this spring. I also would like to thank the Indiana Board of Animal Health for assisting and supporting the cervid farming industry in Indiana.”

With the lifting of the ban, the KDA did establish several conditions under which importation may occur, including, but not limited to, the acquisition of a transportation permit; imported cervids must come from an Indiana CWD certified herd; and the imported cervids shall be travel on a sealed conveyance and received only by SAHO, U.S. Department of Agriculture official, or accredited veterinarian.

“Deer farming is one of the fastest growing industries in the country, and it especially makes strong economical impacts in rural communities,” adds Schafer. “We are very excited to see that this decision will help the farmers in Kentucky and Indiana for years to come.”
