USDA-APHIS Budget Includes $3M for Cervid Activities

On Wednesday, December 9th, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees of the US Congress unveiled the Fiscal Year 2015 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which is the legislation providing for the discretionary funding for the federal government. The legislation includes the full funding of 11 of the 12 annual appropriations bills.

The 12th bill, dealing with the Department of Homeland Security, will be funded only temporarily until February 27, 2015, to allow the incoming Republican-led Congress to address President Obama’s recent proposed changes to immigration policy. The compromise spending agreement signals that we will not experience another government shutdown in the coming days.

NADeFA is very happy to announce $3 Million in funding for cervid health activities, which our association requested of Congress, was included the USDA-APHIS budget. Along with the funding, the bill also includes the following legislative language: “The agreement includes no less than $3,000,000 for cervid health activities. Within the funds provided, APHIS should give consideration to indemnity payments if warranted.”

This funding carries out the CWD herd certification program, supports CWD and EHD research, and also provides for CWD indemnity. Thank you to the individual producers and the state associations who have supported our efforts in Washington, DC. This win would not have been possible without you.
